Recommended Software

This is list of software that I find helpful. I have no affiliation but find these links useful and think others might too.

Recommended Software

  • Visual Studio, if you're coding on Windows
  • Resharper, no self repection developer should be without this
  • JetBrains Rider, Keep an eye on this, we probably wont need Visual Studio much longer (Using this more and more now)
  • #Develop, Free and a great place to start but development seems to have slowed (is there something new now?)
  • Tortoise for Mercurial, SVN, HG, don't work with code without one of these
  • 7Zip, all the file comression you will likely ever need
  • KDiff3, can be compared with even those who think they are beyond it
  • Paint.net, all the photo and bitmap image maniplulation most people need
  • InksScape, frees and completely awesome line drawing and vector graphics
  • GIMP, If you need PhotoShop, but can't pay for it
  • VNC, if the built in RDP is not an option
  • VLC, quick and simple media playback, plays almost everything
  • Kodi, For more serious media playback and streaming, like when that is the only thing you are using your PC for
  • Knopix, got to love the 3D window manager and other great stuff here
  • IPCop, You've got a 'good' firewall, right?
  • CruiseControl.Net, The only one in C# and the one we actually use
  • Hudson, more features and comlpetely free, but in Java and easy to get too coupled.
  • TeamCity, probably the best currently, but also in Java and starts to cost a bit if you need to use it a lot
  • Libre Office, Liberate yourself
  • FireFox, still the most serious browser, but you got to be on top of your addins
  • Vivaldi, new for us, but this browser rocks!
  • ThunderBird, pretty much the only 'propper' email client left.
